ANNOUNCEMENTS

CENG #BLM Town Hall Meeting
When: TODAY, June 5th, 3:30 pm

Our community is hurting right now. Once again, our Black students, faculty, and staff, along with Black individuals in our community and around the country, are faced with the trauma of violence being perpetrated against them. Our foremost duty as educators and members of the Cal Poly community is to work toward your success, both in and out of the classroom and both on and off campus.  We recognize that these trying events that are occurring both nationally and locally are affecting how you live and learn, for some of you much more than others.  We want to gather in community and hear from you, give you the space to share your experiences, hear from others, and collaborate on ways to end systemic forms of oppression.

3. EE/CPE 333 Information

Summer 2020:  EE/CPE 333 -  Computer Hardware Architecture and Design

Schedule:  MWF 2-4pm

Course Prerequisites:  CPE/EE 233.

Why is this class compelling?
Computers today are ubiquitous. The computer industry, driven by process scaling, embraces innovation at a breath-taking rate.  As an example, had the transportation industry kept pace with the computer industry, today we could travel from New York to London in a second for a penny.  Each time the cost of computing improves by another factor of 10, the opportunities for computers multiply.  Applications that were economically infeasible suddenly become practical.  In this new course, we will learn about the fundamentals of computer architecture and organization.  We will design and build the hardware of a modern computer architecture and develop software to run on it!   The high performance computer we will build is based on the open-source, license-free, and royalty-free ISA specification, RISCV, which has experienced recent rapid growth in industry.  It is supported by a growing shared software ecosystem and has both proprietary and open-source core implementations. It is also appropriate for all levels of computing systems, from microcontrollers to supercomputers. The RISCV standard is maintained by the non-profit RISCV Foundation (which includes companies such as Google, IBM, Samsung, Nivdia, SiFive, Western Digital, etc.).  This course will provide students a solid foundation for pursuing a wide range of exciting careers in computing.

Course Description:   Study of a hardware design of a specific CPU. Pipelining, input/output, multi-processors, and performance measurement. Implementation of CPU architectural and computer components using hardware-description languages and development board platforms.

Other comments:  Dr. Callenes-Sloan is eager to work with you and his students assistants to share knowledge on the topic and build new exciting computer designs.  Many students have already found that this course prepared them well for their future job interviews and careers.

How do I get a permission number for this class:   Email Yvonne Lynch (ylynch@calpoly.edu) and Professor Callenes-Sloan (jcallene@calpoly.edu) ASAP.

You are welcome to drop in at any time during each session to ask the experts your Schedule Builder-related questions. Registration is not required.

Please note: These drop-in sessions are not designed to provide registration or advising assistance.

Please join us on any of the following dates:

Tuesday, June 9: 1 p.m. - 2 p.m.

Thursday, June 11: 2 p.m. - 3 p.m.

Friday, June 12: 11 a.m. – 12 p.m.

5. Computer Engineering Society (CPEs) Needs Your Help

The Computer Engineering Society (CPES) is a general purpose computing club for any and all students with an interest in computers, and we currently provide primarily educational opportunities to those students to further enhance their experience in the classroom. As the CPE program transitions to a department, we thought this would be a great opportunity for CPES to transition into a different kind of club, focused on building community for the computing departments and providing events and services to their students.

Before undergoing any major changes, we wanted to reach out to you, the general student body, to see what you would like to see in the "new" CPES. This new form of the club will be dedicated to serving the students, so we value your opinion greatly as we go through this change.

Please take a minute of your time to complete this short survey, and feel free to reach out to us if you have any questions or concerns!
