The following senior projects were discussed at the Fall 2019 Pitch 2 Programmers event:
Optimizing Patient Care Coordination
David Duke | dduke@mastodonsolutions.com
SLO County is in need of a patient-centered release system that can help connect individuals with the care they need outside of the hospital. This project seeks to update the current hard-copy paper authorization process for patient release of information into a digitized format. This allows patient release info to be distributed among multiple agencies and help community care providers serve those in need more quickly and efficiently.

Problems Worth Solving
Brian Schwartz | brian@selfpublish.org | (805) 225-1251
I am a 10+ year entrepreneur and Cal Poly Grad (IT '94). I'm still working with a graduate from a former P2P session, so I value the opportunity to share my ideas with the brightest and the best that Cal Poly has to offer. One thing I've gained clarity on over the years is that it's easy to burn time and money building cool things. Yes, experimenting is super valuable, but the real fuel (passion) comes from finding a problem worth solving. The problem justifies the means to every action, and when you work toward something bigger than yourself (the problem to solve), people will support you in ways you'd never imagine.

Digital Forensics | Cloud Projects
John Oliver | jyoliver@calpoly.edu
Oliver is looking for students interested in working on cloud-based forensic projects. Tasks would include analysis, research, and application of ethics in responding to unique issues arising from cloud-based information management.

Direct-to-Consumer Solar Sales Platform
Clara Brechtel | cbrechte@calpoly.edu
Currently, the process to purchase solar is complicated and time-consuming. Homeowners must do extensive research and talk to multiple salespeople to find the best option for their house. This process could take months and is a huge hurdle limiting the amount of solar sales. With the current tax incentives and state requirements encouraging solar, there are affordable ways for homeowners to go solar, but these options are hard for homeowners to find. We are working on developing an online platform that uses machine learning, computer vision, and existing Google Maps API’s to provide consumers with instant quotes for solar on their home. With these quotes, we partner with local solar installers and provide them with solar installation jobs. We are looking for students interested in joining our team for software and web development and are open to remote positions.
Various Projects
Jay Kamarkar | GiantKarma1@gmail.com
- Ricoh Theta 360 steradian camera based rapid image rectification and analysis.
- Open source based natural language programming (NLP) applied to extract emotional content from text messaging, and infer intent.
- CAD utility for Feedback Controllers, using 3D space visualization GUI & symbolic programming techniques.
- Social E-Games to Promote Local Commerce
- Nano-Drone Project

Software to Promote a Socially-Resonsible Consumer
Garrett Perkins | garrett@ethicmarketplace.us | (805)423-4236 | ethicmarketplace.us
Climate action has traditionally been the responsibility of corporations and politicians, despite the fact that 80% of global pollutants are the direct result of consumer decisions. Our impacts extend far beyond the commonly-blamed transportation and energy use, and the products that we buy have far larger impacts than we will generally admit. At Ethic, our mission is to help people reduce their impacts and use their purchasing decisions as a vote for the kind of world that they want to see. We're an incubating startup that is already generating revenue, and we need help simplifying the merchant interaction process. We're looking to have a web application built that monitors vendor products and inventory levels, pushes customer orders to their traditional workflow process, and streamlines vendor payments. We're going to enable people to change the world, and we'd love to have you on our team.
Patient Care Collaboration Software
Ryan Murtaugh | rmurtaug@calpoly.edu
Bridge is building SaaS (Software as a Service) for mental health professionals. Our software allows Mental health professionals like therapists and psychologists, to connect, communicate, and collaborate to provide better client care. We are connecting a previously fragmented sector through technology. Our team is looking for excited students that can help us build our software. We are open to remote positions but prefer if you can stay over summer and possibly beyond to help us get Bridge to market!

Robot and Communications Projects
Hugh Smith | husmith@calpoly.edu
I have a number of projects that involve both hardware and software or just software.
- Hardware/Software – Develop a hardware device, using a Raspberry PI, for the home allowing for easy voice messaging to family members. This project includes backed server development.
- Hardware/Software: Integrate a Raspberry PI with the CPE123 robot. The PI will communicate with an Arduino Mega to control the robot.
- Hardware/Software: Connect an ESP8266 Wifi board to the Robot and provide a web interface to allow multiple robots to communicate. This project includes backend server development.
- Software: A video app that allows easy communications with family members. App would be developed for a tablet but also include Android and iOS phones. This project includes backed server development.

Machine Learning to Predict Solar Irradiance
The goal is to predict up to an hour the power generation from a solar field. There is a considerable interest in increasing the accuracy of those predictions in order to reduce the uncertainties in grid management. The system uses a Total Sky Camera for input data and is a follow up project started by Jonathon Scott (CSC) last year.
Psychological Influence of Thermal Comfort
Jennifer Mott Peuker | jpeuker@calpoly.edu
I am starting research on the psychological influence of thermal comfort. I need a web/mobile based way to collect data on how people feel in rooms around campus, e.g., hot, cold, etc. I'd also like to collect information about activity and clothing, and be able to compare collected data to actual room conditions.
Personalized Learning/Intelligent Tutoring
Brian Self | bself@calpoly.edu
One of the Engineering Grand Challenges (http://www.engineeringchallenges.org) is to Advance Personalized Learning. To pursue this challenge, we have a formed multidisciplinary team from mechanical engineering and from physics, and from both Cal Poly and from Allan Hancock College, that is developing Adaptive Learning Modules (ALM) for use in mechanics. These modules will consist of interactive videos, concept questions, branching based on the answers to those questions, and also simulations showing important mechanics principles. Students could work on the adaptive learning/intelligent tutoring portion of the project, the scientific simulations and visualization part, or both. The team would work with professors at Cal Poly, Allan Hancock College, and potentially collaborators at Oregon State.
Healthcare Price Transparency App
Consider the following:
- Lack of price transparency and giant medical bills scaring patients from seeking care
- Yearly insurance premium increases
- Millions living with high deductibles ($5K+) or no insurance
- Exploding medical bills causing bankruptcies
Build an app and/or website modeled after GoodRx that displays the cash prices for the top 100 imaging studies and the top 100 lab tests (for starters).

Financial Technology Application Development
Jack Kooley | jkooley@calpoly.edu
We are four students working on developing a financial technology application to help people with their personal finances. We are an interdisciplinary senior project team comprised of two CS/SWE and two Business majors. We are hoping to add two CS people to our team. The benefits of working with us is FinTech is a booking industry and has many interesting technical aspects to it such as AI, data analysis and predictive modeling and so much more! You also get to add this project to your resume (which is very relevant to the current technical landscape) or have the opportunity to join our team and try to make this idea a business!
