6. DTS Tech Talk - Artificial Reverberation Processing of Digital Audio Signals | October 23 | 20-128 | 5pm

The Cal Poly Audio Engineering Society is proud to be hosting Dr. Jean-Marc Jot, senior vice president of research at DTS, today, Friday, October 23rd, at 5pm in room 20-128. Dr. Jot will stick around after his presentation for open discussion with students and is actively seeking internship candidates. Pizza and refreshments will also be provided.

Abstract:

Artificial reverberation is an essential tool in the production of music recordings and soundtracks, or for modifying or simulating the acoustics of a listening room.  In some rare applications, such as architectural acoustics, it is desired to reproduce accurately the acoustic response of a particular room.  In the majority of practical applications, however, it is only necessary to create an artificial reverberation effect that is perceptually indistinguishable from real reverberation.  In this talk, we review some of the history of digital reverberation methods and demonstrate, from basic principles, a rational approach for designing natural-sounding reverberators suitable from professional audio production uses.

Bio:

Dr. Jot leads research and development activities at DTS, Inc., particularly in the areas of audio reproduction and fidelity enhancement for consumer entertainment applications. Prior to joining DTS, he led the development of several generations of Creative Labs’ SoundBlaster 3-D audio and audio processing technologies. While at Creative, he contributed to the development of new interactive 3-D audio standards for games and virtual reality.  He began his career at IRCAM in Paris (France), where he developed methods for spatial audio signal processing and room acoustics analysis, for applications in computer music and virtual meetings.  He is a recipient of the Audio Engineering Society Fellowship Award and a member of the IEEE Audio and Acoustics Signal Processing Technical Committee.  (For more details: sites.google.com/site/jmmjot.)
