1. Volunteers for VEX IQ
Robotics Workshop
When: November 3, 2018
Where: ATL and Bonderson
This year the 1st annual VEX IQ Robotics Workshop for the Central Coast will be hosted by Cal Poly Society of Women Engineers. With the Central Coast's growth of competing VEX IQ teams (ages 8-14), this workshop will provide students an opportunity to learn basic engineering concepts, build and program their robots with Cal Poly students as mentors, and obtain and practice soft skills such as presentation and documentation.
This event is an excellent
opportunity to get involved in Robotics Outreach, gain volunteer experience for
the VEX Robotics Competition and VEX Volunteer Team, and mentor elementary and
middle school VEX teams in this year’s IQ game “Next Level”. Game video: https://youtu.be/IJML1_JNCLI.

Time: 10am – 2pm
Where: Advanced
Technology Lab (ATL)
If you’re interested
in machine learning and IoT development, DataPalooza is offering a fun and

recognition technology to maximize crowd enjoyment at a fictional music
festival.
Sign up now for the
4-hour workshop, which will be held Nov. 6 at the Advanced Technology Lab (ATL)
from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
DataPalooza’s
Machine Learning Music Festival Lab offers students with no machine learning
experience an opportunity to acquire hands-on experience in a workshop hosted
by AWS and Intel experts. During the workshop, students will act as data
scientists working for a bold new startup hoping to provide a new experience
for EDM concertgoers. Students will leverage machine learning and internet of
things to devise an app that provides real time insights into the crowd
response at different stages, enabling fans to find stages with the best
performances and allowing artists to monitor crowd response to adjust their
setlist, if needed.
You must have an AWS
account in order to participate. Sign up at https://aws.amazon.com/ before the
workshop so that you are ready to go when it begins! (Please note that on the day of the workshop,
devices will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis and that your
registration does not guarantee a spot in the workshop).
Please e-mail
datapalooza@majorleaguehacking.com if you have any questions about the
workshop.

12.
Interdisciplinary Student Winter Project on Biomimicry.
Are you interested in
product design, engineering and development? Or biology, business applications
or sustainability? Consider working on an interdisciplinary student winter project on biomimicry. Biomimicry
is solving human problems using solutions found in nature. Students must
consider social, environmental and profitability issues as they design a product that will solve a climate
challenge.
The project works best if
student team members are from different colleges. They really appreciate the
opportunity to work with and learn from students in other fields. Students can
receive senior project credit, technical elective or regular elective credit.
For more information, see
the flyer at https://tinyurl.com/yc7vc8vm or contact Professor Norm Borin at
nborin@calpoly.edu.

13. Senior Project Ideas
Start up
“We are a group of
CS and BUS students looking for students interested in joining our senior
project team to help build a startup. We are looking at a broad range of
problems in society and we are using AR/VR technology to solve them. If you’re
interested in joining our team or have any questions email Erika Kaplan at emkaplan@calpoly.edu.”
***
App Development
“A fellow Cal Poly
student and I are looking for a computer science major who would be interested
in working with us on our senior project (hopefully it could count as your
senior project as well!). We are in need of someone who can help assist us in
developing an app that would benefit Cal Poly students. Therefore, experience
in app development and/or coding would be essential for this project. Please
email danicaschutt@yahoo.com or jakzolina@gmail.com if this is something
you are interested in doing! Looking forward to working with one of you!”

Prof. Ventura is
looking for students to work on a public health-related augmented reality
project this quarter. The project will likely involve point-and-click
design rather than custom software development. A quick turnaround is
needed and project funds are available to provide stipends. Interested
students with all levels of experience are encouraged to contact Prof. Ventura
at jventu09@calpoly.edu to learn more.

Development of a User
Interface for an Ultrasonic Oxide Thickness Measuring System
Ultrasonic devices can be
used to measure the internal oxide thickness of boiler tubes. Intertek has been
using these systems since the early 2000’s, but the technology is a bit
outdated and is not user friendly. The system is made of an ultrasonic pulser,
receiver, and A/D signal digitizer in one box, powered and connected by USB to
a laptop. The pulser shoots a sound wave into the tube from the outside, and
every time it hits an interface (air‐to‐metal, metal‐to‐oxide, oxide‐to‐air),
the instrument detects a reflection and corresponding peaks in the sound
profile produced by the receiver and signal digitizer. From previous
experiments Intertek knows the speed of sound in the various materials found in
boiler tubes, as well as in the oxide, and by measuring the distance between
peaks, they can accurately measure the oxide thickness. From this thickness, as
well as how long the tube has been in service, and a few other parameters,
Intertek engineers can determine the average tube temperature, and remaining
useful life. Intertek has found a replacement for the pulser/receiver box
manufactured by TECLAB, which already interfaces with a laptop, but the project
that they would like to propose is for MATE and Software Engineering students
to develop the software that Intertek would use to perform their work. It would
take the input from the TECLAB device, and do everything needed by the
engineers: automatically detect the correct peaks and measure the wall
thickness and oxide thickness, save the data in a convenient way, and keep
track of points in a grid format (typically data will be taken in say 30 rows,
banks 1‐12). Other functionality may be needed as well.

14. Job Opportunities
"I’m looking
for IOS developers to create a project with me, hopefully 3-4 of
us including myself.
The company internal
structure we’ll be working to create is a combination of Patagonia, the early
days of Pixar and Ricardo Semlar’s Semco. It’s heavily designed
around productivity, creativity, happiness, low stress and a work
life balance better than anywhere else.
Swift/Xcode experience
is not an absolute necessity but it will help greatly, if you
are a quality programmer and are willing to learn a new language and
development environment while we create the project together that is fine. I am
more interested in highly independent, intrinsically
motivated individuals, with a specific knack and passion for
learning new things; individuals who have a love for
design and quality products and who have distaste for Dark
Pattern UX design.
If you are interested in
these ideas and want to work on an exciting project that almost every person on
the Internet will use, please reach out to me. I’ll be happy to explain
the project and answer any other questions you may have.
Aloha,
