The Goal of Stop-Light-Go! is to build a robot that can follow lines, avoid an obstacles, and deposit various colored balls into different colored baskets. The team that finishes the entire course the fastest, wins!

WISH/IEEE Marble Sorter Project

Description:
Come join IEEE and WISH as we demonstrate how to build a marble sorter. We will be using microcontrollers, servo motors, IR sensors and much more to sort marbles by their colors. If you want to get hands-on project experience (can be added to your resume!), join us! Pizza will be included.

5. RFID Club Upcoming Activities
Club description: The Radio Frequency Identification(RFID) club is a multidisciplinary club that perform RFID projects. RFID is a rapidly growing technology which has many uses including consumer interactive marketing, embedded electronics, inventory tracking, access control, and counterfeit prevention. Many top companies have some sort of RFID within their business structure or products. As an EE or a CPE, you play a huge role working with both the hardware and the software side. Joining RFID is a great way to practice what you’ve learned in class and apply to many practical projects from industries. We also offer many opportunities to mingle with industry. We are currently seeking individuals with the coding and electronics knowledge to help with our many projects.

QL+ (Quality of Life Plus) is a multidisciplinary club specializing in prostheses, medical devices, and assistive technology to increase the quality of life of wounded veterans and community members.
We will be having a general meeting on Tuesday, February 16th from 6-7pm in the QL+ lab, and we will be working on our Quarterly Design Competition. 12. iFixit Security Triathlon | February 27 | 1pm
Join iFixit for a “security triathlon” to learn and compete in software hacking, traditional lockpicking, and tearing down hardware! Gather your team of around 3-5 people and come tackle whatever events interest you most. There are a limited number of slots available for teams, so register early. Don’t have all the skills yourself? That’s ok, you can either team up with someone who does or pick up skills on the fly. You don’t need to be an expert! Each event will have coaches available to help.
Points will be awarded for each activity and high scoring teams will receive prizes at the end of the night. Come out and join iFixit’s engineers and Cal Poly’s cybersecurity director Bill Britton to hone your skills and enjoy a little friendly competition.
Dinner will be provided by iFixit, and after the event we will be streaming the movie Hackers in the office for anyone who would like to stick around.

We are seeking a digital design (firmware) engineer with experience in lab debugging to join our team of firmware/software engineers at the MIT Kavli Institute for Astrophysics and Space Research (space.mit.edu).
Applicable experience:
· VHDL or Verilog for digital design
· Xilinx tools (Vivado or ISE) for synthesis, place and route, simulation a plus
· Lab hardware debug with logic analyzers, oscilloscopes (Chipscope a plus)
Tasks will include:
· Interface with software team to create, debug, and maintain firmware for satellite test equipment
· Read specifications, generate lab test plans, and debug current firmware design on a board with a Virtex-7 Xilinx chip
· Generate specification and code firmware design for packetizing science data
· Code testbench and tests for firmware design verification

Dominique (Dom) DeGuzman (she/her) is a community-taught software engineer with a background in enterprise desktop hardware support and formalized public speaking. After years in hardware, Dom used building and provisioning Linux machines as a jumping point into software and tools development. As part of the Systems Engineering at Twilio team, she’s administratively responsible for systems such as LDAP, Jenkins, Cloudability and AWS.
Dom is a co-founder and co-organizer of the Diversity & Inclusion program at Twilio, and sits as an advisor for Twilio's Women's Organization and the LGBTQA Employee Resource Group. Outside of Twilio, Dom is the San Francisco City Director forLesbians Who Tech, an organization that highlights and elevates queer women in tech. She also helps organize two Diversity & Inclusion startup coalitions with over 20 other companies: the Diversity Advocates and the LGBTQ ERG Alliance.
Dom will have two ten minute talks: one focusing on intersectionality between Dom’s technical identities and identities outside of technology, and the other on the brogrammer culture. After a short 30 minute talk we hope to follow with an hour long discussion about intersectionality in our own lives. Media tends to focus on one part of the identity. It's actually pretty harmful because by highlighting one of these identities, it almost takes light away from another. Discussing intersectionality allows us to have a deeper understanding of the challenges we all face.

4. RFID Club is Looking for CPE majors!
For those of you that don't know, the RFID club is a project-based club that teaches students how to design, test, and implement RFID solutions. The technology involves several unique software components that have to interface with RF hardware. We intend to teach new members about RFID in weekly 1-hour info sessions. The RFID club welcomes all new members, if you have any questions do not hesitate to contact me.
The first project is an RFID driven music light show (dare I say, rave), where colored lights change depending on where you stand in the room. This project needs to be defined, researched, designed, coded (yay!) and tested.
The next project for the quarter is a sustainability effort by campus dining to build a Zero Waste take-home container system facilitated by RFID. The idea is to have return bins that use RFID antennas to identify when you have returned your container and to update your mycalpoly account. We need to research, design, build, and test the return bins to provide a feasibility report to campus dining.
The third project is convince to university to purchase RFID tagged polycards. The benefits of tagged polycards are huge: easier access to and control of access to restricted areas (like the undergrad lab), faster and more secure payment method at campus dining locations, tickets to on campus events like concerts can be digitized and tied to your polycard, faster and easier boarding for buses, and more!
If these projects sound interesting to you we will be having our first meeting Thursday (1/14/16), week 2, during UU hour 11:00am to noon at Bonderson Bd 197, in the lobby.
Their next general meeting will be Sunday Jan 24 at 1:00pm in the Polygait lab in building 4.

The Cal Poly Advanced Technology Laboratories (ATL) houses a Transportation Management Center (TMC) Simulator. The TMC Simulator is used to teach Caltrans and CHP traffic operations personnel strategies and techniques for managing traffic incidents and congestion. The TMC Simulator provides a live, hands-on approach to training which immerses trainees in a simulated traffic management environment.
We are working on new tools and integrating existing traffic management tools into the TMC simulator and are looking for capable and hard-working software design and development engineering student assistants.

3. Upcoming WISH Activities
This winter quarter, WISH will be teaming up with Pacheco Elementary school for a Code Club they have started. We will be helping them with a six week program where once a week WISH members will go to their school and teach a group of about 10-20 kids how to code! We will be using the lesson plan from code.org, and the kids are in second grade. It would take place at the school, which is one mile from Kennedy Library, just off of Highland Drive.
The program will be on Thursdays from 3:15-4:15, starting on January 14th and ending on February 18th. While we would like to have people who could attend all six sessions, it is perfectly okay if you can only volunteer for one or two sessions.
If this sounds like something you would be interested in helping with, please fill out the survey below! The survey will have a list of dates you can select to volunteer on. Right now we are unsure how many volunteers are needed per day, so signing up for a time does not guarantee that you will be chosen to volunteer this day, but you are committing to this day if chosen.

In this hands-on class you will work in teams to revise and improve Solar Powered Educational Learning Library kits that disseminate educational materials over an off-line Wi-Fi hotspot. Last year, we designed, built, and deployed 50 SPELL libraries! We also discovered plenty of room for improvement so that the project can expand. Are you up for the challenge?

Cal Poly’s annual Innovation Quest (iQ) competition is back for its 13th year and students of all colleges and majors are highly encouraged to apply and participate. iQ is a contest that fosters entrepreneurship, creativity, and innovation and helps students learn about the journey from idea to prototype to company. Students with projects, inventions, creations, or startup concepts can bring their ideas to iQ and compete for cash prizes. This year’s competition will award at least $30,000 in prizes, with a $15,000 first place prize.

14. Northrop Grumman Collaboration Project Needs You!
The Northrop Grumman Collaboration Project is recruiting new members to help design, build, test, and automate various types of unmanned vehicles (UAVs). These unmanned vehicles include planes, quadcopters, and ROVs. This work requires all types of engineering students, and no experience is required. Students interested in autonomous collision avoidance, computer vision, encrypted communication, and underwater wireless communications are encouraged to come check the project out. The project is sponsored exclusively by Northrop Grumman and Northrop routinely hires interns and full time workers off the project. The first meeting of the quarter will be January 7th from 11am - noon in 20-145.

15. iOS Senior Project/Directed Study Opportunity
Do you know iOS or are you willing to learn iOS quickly? This project is to create an iOS app to be used in a collaborative research study with Mechanical Engineering. The app will regularly prompt student participants in the study to enter data about their course activities throughout the quarter. 16. Judges Needed for Jonata Middle School Science Fair
7th and 8th grade science teacher, Erin Dunkle, at Jonata Middle School in Buellton has over 100 science projects that need to be judged on Thursday January 28th from 8:30 - 4:30. This is the first time Jonata Middle School has put together their science fair early enough in the year to enable their young scientists to have the opportunity to compete at the county and state level.
Judges are needed to cover all categories - chemical, physical, biological, environmental, behavioral, engineering, etc. Retirees and graduate students are all welcome! If you enjoy science and have at least a BA degree, please come and help us! Your input will determine which of the projects can continue on to the Santa Barbara County Science Fair at UCSB in March.
Opportunities only happen for future scientists if we all play a role in make a difference in our public education system. Please contact me if you think you can help. If you can't come on that day we still need mentors for the projects that move forward, which would only involve a couple of flexible after school/evening hours of your time or if you can only come for part of the day on January 28th, that works too!

17. Research Opportunities for Undergraduates with NSF
We're excited to announce our nine-week summer Research Experiences for Undergraduates in Software Security program in 2016, funded by the National Science Foundation.
The program will support groups of 10 undergraduate students each summer for three years as they develop confidence as researchers and scientists. This new REU site will provide students with a competitive research experience and is aimed at motivating them to pursue graduate studies in this important field.
Students may apply through March 1, 2016 at coen.boisestate.edu/cs/reu/application. Each student selected will receive a total stipend of $4,500, housing, meals and reimbursement of travel expenses from their home school to Boise State. The program runs from May 30-July 30, 2016.

20. National Science Foundation Research Program for Undergrads at Texas A&M University
Texas A&M University will be hosting a National Science Foundation (NSF) Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program from May 31-August 5, 2016. This summer program will provide opportunities for undergraduate students to learn about mechatronics, robotics, and automated system design.
Activities will include joining a research group led by a faculty mentor, completion of a 10-week research project, and participation in weekly seminars, field trips, and career development workshops.
Each participant will receive a stipend of $500/week for participation in the program. Other benefits include housing, meal and travel allowances; 1.0 credit hour of undergraduate course credit; and full access to university recreational facilities.

12. Innovation Quest Competition Info Session | January 12 | 6pm – 7:30pm | 007
Cal Poly’s annual Innovation Quest (iQ) competition is back for its 13th year and students of all colleges and majors are highly encouraged to apply and participate. iQ is a contest that fosters entrepreneurship, creativity, and innovation and helps students learn about the journey from idea to prototype to company. Students with projects, inventions, creations, or startup concepts can bring their ideas to iQ and compete for cash prizes. This year’s competition will award at least $30,000 in prizes, with a $15,000 first place prize.
If you don’t have an idea yet, there is no reason to miss out on this incredible opportunity! There will be plenty of teams searching for more members. Join us at our second information session on Tuesday, January 12th from 6-7:30 in the ATL building 007 to find out more.

14. Northrop Grumman Collaboration Project Needs You!
The Northrop Grumman Collaboration Project is recruiting new members to help design, build, test, and automate various types of unmanned vehicles (UAVs). These unmanned vehicles include planes, quadcopters, and ROVs. This work requires all types of engineering students, and no experience is required. Students interested in autonomous collision avoidance, computer vision, encrypted communication, and underwater wireless communications are encouraged to come check the project out. The project is sponsored exclusively by Northrop Grumman and Northrop routinely hires interns and full time workers off the project. The first meeting of the quarter will be January 7th from 11am - noon in 20-145.

15. iOS Senior Project/Directed Study Opportunity
Do you know iOS or are you willing to learn iOS quickly? This project is to create an iOS app to be used in a collaborative research study with Mechanical Engineering. The app will regularly prompt student participants in the study to enter data about their course activities throughout the quarter. An Android app has already been created, along with a Parse backend. Senior project or directed study credit with Dr. David Janzen is available. If interested, contact djanzen@calpoly.edu.

16. Judges Needed for Jonata Middle School Science Fair
7th and 8th grade science teacher, Erin Dunkle, at Jonata Middle School in Buellton has over 100 science projects that need to be judged on Thursday January 28th from 8:30 - 4:30. This is the first time Jonata Middle School has put together their science fair early enough in the year to enable their young scientists to have the opportunity to compete at the county and state level.
Judges are needed to cover all categories - chemical, physical, biological, environmental, behavioral, engineering, etc. Retirees and graduate students are all welcome! If you enjoy science and have at least a BA degree, please come and help us! Your input will determine which of the projects can continue on to the Santa Barbara County Science Fair at UCSB in March.
Opportunities only happen for future scientists if we all play a role in make a difference in our public education system. Please contact me if you think you can help. If you can't come on that day we still need mentors for the projects that move forward, which would only involve a couple of flexible after school/evening hours of your time or if you can only come for part of the day on January 28th, that works too!

17. Research Opportunities for Undergraduates with NSF
We're excited to announce our nine-week summer Research Experiences for Undergraduates in Software Security program in 2016, funded by the National Science Foundation.
The program will support groups of 10 undergraduate students each summer for three years as they develop confidence as researchers and scientists. This new REU site will provide students with a competitive research experience and is aimed at motivating them to pursue graduate studies in this important field.
Students may apply through March 1, 2016 at coen.boisestate.edu/cs/reu/application. Each student selected will receive a total stipend of $4,500, housing, meals and reimbursement of travel expenses from their home school to Boise State. The program runs from May 30-July 30, 2016.

Texas A&M University will be hosting a National Science Foundation (NSF) Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program from May 31-August 5, 2016. This summer program will provide opportunities for undergraduate students to learn about mechatronics, robotics, and automated system design.
Activities will include joining a research group led by a faculty mentor, completion of a 10-week research project, and participation in weekly seminars, field trips, and career development workshops.
Each participant will receive a stipend of $500/week for participation in the program. Other benefits include housing, meal and travel allowances; 1.0 credit hour of undergraduate course credit; and full access to university recreational facilities.

In this hands-on class you will work in teams to revise and
improve Solar Powered Educational Learning Library kits that disseminate
educational materials over an off-line Wi-Fi hotspot. Last year, we designed,
built, and deployed 50 SPELL libraries! We also discovered plenty of room for
improvement so that the project can expand. Are you up for the challenge?
To Enroll: This Liberal Arts and Engineering Studies (LAES) 411 class
is open to all Cal Poly students with Junior standing or above. Admission by instructor approval only.

Video-Game Controllers
