2.  Become a Mentor for CPE 100

The CPE Office is in the process of recruiting CPE Mentors for this coming Fall 2015. We are looking for 40 motivated students to mentor the incoming freshmen (as part of their CPE100 course) during the 2015 fall quarter.  We've gotten positive feedback from students who have participated in the past. And all you need in order to be a successful mentor is a desire to have fun and help others.

If you are interested please add your name to the Mentor list found at:

5. Senior Project Opportunities!!!

ENGR 459-01 Multidisciplinary Senior Design Project Course - Fall 2015

We will be offering a multidisciplinary senior design project course (ENGR 459) this Fall which involves students from all engineering majors.  This is a three-quarter sequence (ENGR 459/460/461) which emphasizes multidisciplinary team collaboration, design, and innovation skills to work on sponsored design projects requiring multidisciplinary talents.  Students will apply a formal engineering design process to solve an open-ended design problem and will design, manufacture, and test solutions to these problems.  The course will be offered Tuesdays and Thursdays 3:10 - 6:00 PM in 197-104 all quarters.  Attached is a flyer which includes examples of previous projects that were run through this class, as well as how this course counts towards each major's curriculum.  Hope to see you in class!

If you have any questions about the course, please contact the current instructors:

Dr. Lily Laiho (BMGE), llaiho@calpoly.edu
Dr. Jim Widmann (ME), jwidmann@calpoly.edu

Special Section of ENGR 459-461 for Interdisciplinary Innovative/Entrepreneurial Senior Projects

Do you want to do a senior project based upon your own innovation or entrepreneurial idea – or get involved with others who are doing this?  A special section of ENGR 459-461 senior project is being offered this year (starting this fall) for students interested in working on an interdisciplinary student-initiated entrepreneurial senior project.  Teams will consist of students from multiple engineering departments and the Orfalea College of Business.  Projects and teams will be finalized during the beginning of fall quarter.

Even if you don't necessarily have an innovation but want the experience of developing a product from scratch and working on an interdisciplinary team to understand the process of developing customers and validating your product’s market acceptance, this is an ideal senior project experience for you.

An example of already approved projects are:

- Robotic Device with Light Sources intended for cleaning and disinfection of objects (e.g. boats)
- Portable rechargeable, supercharging plug outlet/charging stand
- Drag and drop site for developing simple crowdfunding campaigns (e.g. Wix for Kickstarter)
- IOT devices for coffee shops and restaurants to notify businesses when items are empty (e.g. coffee stations)
- Color tunable lighting product with intuitive or responsive programming interface
- Too many ideas to list here!!

If you have an idea or want to participate on a team contact Professor Katona (tkatona@calpoly.edu) to discuss and to obtain a permission number.
