10. Job opportunities with Monolithic Power Systems
Who we are:
We are creative thinkers. We break boundaries. We take technology to new levels. As a leading international semiconductor company, Monolithic Power Systems (MPS) creates cutting-edge solutions to improve the quality of life with green, easy-to-use products.
What we do:
We make power design fun! With our innovative proprietary technology processes, we thrive on re-imagining and re-defining the possibilities of high-performance power solutions in industrial applications, telecom infrastructures, cloud computing, automotive, and consumer applications.
Where we come from:
It started with a vision. Michael Hsing, pioneering engineer and CEO, founded Monolithic Power Systems, Inc. in 1997 with the belief that an entire power system could be integrated onto a single chip. Under his leadership, MPS has succeeded not only in developing a monolithic power module that truly integrates an entire power system in a single package, but also it continues to defy industry expectations with its patented groundbreaking technologies.

11. IME 457 - RFID System Design - Offered in Spring 2016 – Valid Tech Elective
This class is a valid Tech Elective for CPE students
Tali Freed will offer the RFID System Design class again next quarter. This is truly an interdisciplinary class. Although it's a 400-level class, it isn't limited to seniors. Students can take it if they are passionate about the topic and are willing to work. I have had freshmen and graduate students on teams together, doing a fantastic job designing systems, as well as enriching each other. Since the students design and build working RFID systems, the class has 6 hours of lab. However, I offer students some flexibility w.r.t. lab time. One option is to attend lab on both Monday and Wednesday. If, however, one of the lab times conflicts with their other classes, they are allowed to attend lab at other times. I offer about 20 hours of open lab, where either I or one of my assistants is present and can help the students with their projects. We keep track of attendance.

12. EE544 & EE431: VLSI and VLSI lab
Those doing EE307 right now or that plan on taking it next quarter (or those that are past EE307) and are interested in integrated circuit design, EE544 might be something to think about. EE544 was scheduled in Spring so that the people that taped out (fabricated) a chip for Fall 2015's EE431 could test their chips. This year the fabrication schedule was tough to meet and there were no chips taped out. So there went the reason to hold this class.... The result is Tina Smilkstein am changing the content of EE544 a bit to make it useful to those interested in possibly pursuing integrated circuits. Smilkstein will support two groups:
1. People that are interested in taking EE431 in the Fall. I'll get you started on the software and have you design a chip that is "testable". Getting a head start on the software means you'll get 3 extra weeks to spend on the EE431 project in the Fall.
2. People that have already taken EE431 can work on a more in-depth project.
If you have a third idea, Smilkstein am happy to listen.
Smilkstein would still take everyone through the labs and equipment for testing as they would have done if the EE431 people actual did have a chip to test.
A note to CPEs: EE431 is more of a design class and the "EE" part of the name shouldn't deter you if you want to try your hand at design. We do talk about some R, L and C details but much of the class is about algorithms that the software uses, how to use the software, ways to make a chip testable and design approaches. The lab is all about learning the software and doing a design of your choice.

13. CPE 436-Mobile Application Development
The Computer Science Department has just added a new course to the Spring schedule CPE 436-Mobile Application Development. There are two sections and they are both available now on PASS. The Mobile Application focus for both sections will be Android.
---------
14. NRC Research Associateship Programs
The NRC Research Associateship Programs (RAP) promote excellence in scientific and technological research conducted by the U.S. government through the administration of programs offering graduate, postdoctoral, and senior level research opportunities at sponsoring federal laboratories and affiliated institutions. In the NRC Research Associateship Programs, prospective applicants select a research project or projects from among a large group of Research Opportunities available through the website. 15. 2016 Charles P. Lake/Rain for Rent Scholarship Program
Rain for Rent is pleased to announce its 2016 Scholarship Program. The Charles P. Lake/Rain for Rent Scholarship was established in honor of the company’s founder who passed away in August of 1988 at the age of 94. Mr. Lake started Western Oilfields Supply Company in 1934 to supply used equipment to the local oilfields. Mr. Lake was well-traveled, well-read and involved in community activities — president of the Kern County Board of Trade and Bakersfield Rotary. He believed in education and supported the construction of the Kern County Beale Library. In his memory, the Charles P. Lake/Rain for Rent Scholarship was established in 1988. Over the years the scholarship has grown to providing thirty-five scholarships in the amount of $1,500.00 each annually to qualified students to help them pursue a career in agriculture, engineering or construction management.

11. Job/Internship Opportunity at Threadloom
Below is a message from Alyssa, a Cal Poly alum who worked at Google and then recently joined this start up.
My company (Threadloom) is looking for its second hire, and also for an intern this summer. I took a risk, leaving a great job (that I enjoyed!), to join Threadloom in November as the first hire. I am so happy that I did!
I love:
- The people I work with. Greg and Paul (founders) are incredibly good at what they do, and inspiring, supportive, and humble in how they do it.
- What I'm learning. I'm learning things (both technical, and about building a company) I never dreamed I would be in a position to learn.
- That I can have a lasting impact on the company by helping define inclusive company culture and policies. I love that our small startup cares about getting these things right from the very beginning since they will have lasting effects.
Come help us build a great product and a great company where people (our customers, our community, and each other) are valued!
About:
Threadloom is a three-person, venture-funded startup in Silicon Valley. We're building products that help people follow what they love. We’re looking for a software developer to join our core team as Employee #2 and an intern who wants to dive right in and make a big impact. We're a people-focused team that cares about shipping great products, solving problems that matter, and developing a respectful and humble company culture.
Please find more info here: http://goo.gl/ZPXped.
And feel free to reach out to me personally (alyssa@threadloom.com).
Thanks!
Alyssa

Thanks!
Alyssa

12. iFixit Security Triathlon | February 27 | 1pm
Join iFixit for a “security triathlon” to learn and compete in software hacking, traditional lockpicking, and tearing down hardware! Gather your team of around 3-5 people and come tackle whatever events interest you most. There are a limited number of slots available for teams, so register early. Don’t have all the skills yourself? That’s ok, you can either team up with someone who does or pick up skills on the fly. You don’t need to be an expert! Each event will have coaches available to help.
Points will be awarded for each activity and high scoring teams will receive prizes at the end of the night. Come out and join iFixit’s engineers and Cal Poly’s cybersecurity director Bill Britton to hone your skills and enjoy a little friendly competition.
Dinner will be provided by iFixit, and after the event we will be streaming the movie Hackers in the office for anyone who would like to stick around.
The event is totally free, but you do need to register for tickets as a team through the Eventbrite link posted below:
https://securitytriathlon.eventbrite.com
Other information can be found on the Eventbrite page. We’d love to see lots of Cal Poly students there!

Dominique DeGuzman: Talks on Intersectionality & The Brogrammer Culture

When: Tuesday 2/9, 7-9pm
Where: UU 220
Description:
RSVP HERE: goo.gl/8QSE4D
Dominique (Dom) DeGuzman (she/her) is a community-taught software engineer with a background in enterprise desktop hardware support and formalized public speaking. After years in hardware, Dom used building and provisioning Linux machines as a jumping point into software and tools development. As part of the Systems Engineering at Twilio team, she’s administratively responsible for systems such as LDAP, Jenkins, Cloudability and AWS.
Dom is a co-founder and co-organizer of the Diversity & Inclusion program at Twilio, and sits as an advisor for Twilio's Women's Organization and the LGBTQA Employee Resource Group. Outside of Twilio, Dom is the San Francisco City Director forLesbians Who Tech, an organization that highlights and elevates queer women in tech. She also helps organize two Diversity & Inclusion startup coalitions with over 20 other companies: the Diversity Advocates and the LGBTQ ERG Alliance.
Dom will have two ten minute talks: one focusing on intersectionality between Dom’s technical identities and identities outside of technology, and the other on the brogrammer culture. After a short 30 minute talk we hope to follow with an hour long discussion about intersectionality in our own lives. Media tends to focus on one part of the identity. It's actually pretty harmful because by highlighting one of these identities, it almost takes light away from another. Discussing intersectionality allows us to have a deeper understanding of the challenges we all face.
