We've gotten positive feedback from students who have participated in the past. And all you need in order to be a successful mentor is a desire to have fun and help others. 4. Morro Bay National Estuary Needs Help Developing a Web-based Computer Game
The Morro Bay National Estuary Program is a nonprofit organization that protects and restores Morro Bay. They are currently working with some Cal Poly Biology and Physics faculty on research on eelgrass in the bay. They also do environmental outreach and education and have a free unmanned Nature Center located near our offices. They are planning to update the interactive touch screen kiosk that they currently have installed in the Nature Center to feature some more exciting and modern content.
One of the ideas we have is to include a new very simple web-based computer game that could get across some basic environmental stewardship messages. They would like people to be able to play this game in 5 minutes or less.
They have two game topic ideas:
1. A focus on steelhead and clean water where, perhaps, the steelhead grows if you adjust the water conditions just right (planting vegetation near the stream bank, keeping trash out, etc.), and perishes if not. This would teach players about water quality and what wildlife need in order to thrive.
2. A Pacman type game where the player follows around your dog who keeps depositing waste along the streets, parks, etc. You have to pick up the waste to keep the water clean. You get points for picking it up. The message would be that we need to pick up after our pets in order to keep bacteria out of local creeks, streams, and the estuary.
