2. Eta Kappa Nu? Eta Kappa You!
The EE and ECE departments are working together to bring Eta Kappa Nu, the Electrical and Computer Engineering Honor Society, back to campus! This organization was founded over 100 years ago to honor hard working and otherwise exceptional engineers in our technical areas. It is also an organization dedicated to service, and members often engage in activities like tutoring, outreach, event planning, and you name it! To bring the organization back, we'll need the help of a few dedicated students to take on initial leadership roles in the club. If you're a sophomore, junior, senior, or masters student and think you might be interested in helping to get the Cal Poly chapter up and running again, please email Professor Danowitz (adanowit@calpoly.edu).

This laboratory course introduces experimental procedures in polymer electronics used to fabricate and test the characteristics of solid state electronic devices. The student will be able to make an electronic device based on a semiconducting polymer and characterize its performance. Students may enroll for either one or more units. Students enrolling for one unit will make and characterize the performance of a solid state electronic device. Students enrolling for more units will also design, carry out, and document an experiment in a manner that is suitable for submission as a peer-reviewed journal article or as a patent application. Pre-requisite EE 347, MATE 340, CHEM 319, or PHYS 340.

8. Presentation on Applying Data Science to International Development – January 10
Dr. Laura Hughes
Data Scientist, USAID GeoCenter
Tuesday, January 10
11:10am - 12:00pm
26-106 (Graphics Communications, room 106)
The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) is the lead U.S. government-sponsored international development agency that works to end extreme global poverty and enable resilient, democratic societies to realize their potential. In this talk, we will present an overview of the GeoCenter's work in applying geospatial technology, data analytics, and scenario planning to inform international development programming at USAID. We will present results from collaborations with field-based missions in Ethiopia, Bangladesh, and Rwanda to optimize the strategic planning, design, monitoring, and evaluation of USAID’s programs.
Laura Hughes is a data scientist at the U.S. Agency for International Development. As a member of the GeoCenter, she uses data science and visualization to analyze international development issues. She also trains people on how to use data visualizations to communicate complex problems and solutions. Trained as a biophysical chemist, Laura is passionate about translating messy data and complex statistical analyses into understandable insights that can influence policy and investment decisions. She holds a Ph.D. from Stanford University, an M.Phil. from the University of Cambridge as a Gates Cambridge Scholar, and a M.S./B.A. from Northwestern University.
