Info Session       Bldg 192 Rm 240                Thurs, Jan 25, 11:10 AM - 12:00 PM

Studying in China offers you the chance to embrace a new culture and learn about a country with a history dating back thousands of years, whose economy has been growing dramatically these past two decades. Knowledge of China is increasingly desired by employers and provides you an edge in your resume. In addition to gaining such a study abroad experience, you are able to accelerate your academic degree progress by earning Cal Poly academic credits. Students who participate in Engineering in China 2018 will take STAT 312 (4 units), ENGR 400 (2 units) and IME 471 (1 unit). Dr. John Oliver has agreed to allow CPE students who participate in this program to substitute STAT 350 with STAT 312.

Engineering in China, a Cal Poly faculty led global program is designed to offer Cal Poly students a multidisciplinary international team experience. International teams will be formed consisting of Cal Poly students and Chinese students from Zhejiang University of Technology (ZJUT) and you will take classes and conduct projects together with the intent of applying the knowledge they acquire to solve real-world problems. Through this experience, you will learn how to work in a team with different cultural backgrounds. You will gain problem-solving skills by conducting real world projects. You will also improve communication skills and develop leadership skills in a multi-cultural environment. It is expected that students will be ready to function in a global environment after this program.

Plant tours of manufacturing companies are integrated into the program. We will visit Volvo/Jili Auto Company, Plexus (http://www.plexus.com/solutions/overview), Jingshen M&E Co., and Xio-lift elevator/escalator Co.

Six days of cultural excursions in Hangzhou and Shanghai are part of the program. We will visit the Bund and the 100th floor of the Financial Center in Shanghai, and taste famous Nanxiang Steamed Bun (Baozi) at Yu Garden and have a nice buffet dinner at the Oriental Pearl Tower in Shanghai. West Lake of Hangzhou, a United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Site, is a must visit place. In addition, we will experience the beauty of Suzhou classical garden, ride a boat at the Xixi Wetland National Park, and taste spring water from the Tiger Spring.

Detailed information of this program is available at Cal Poly study abroad website: https://abroad.calpoly.edu/index.cfm?FuseAction=Programs.ViewProgram&Program_ID=10761

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact John Pan  at pan@calpoly.edu or stop by his office at Bldg 192 Rm 235 during my office hours, Tuesday & Wednesday 8:40am to 11:00am.

3. APP Development Club

We have officially decided our yearly projects! After a tough selection from 18 app ideas, we have chosen the following 4!
CAPTURE THE FLAG - play capture the flag with little more than your friends and their phones. Run around your map and play to win with classic capture the flag rules.
ASSASSIN - based off assassin rules found in several video games, hunt your friend (a.k.a target) via location tracking.
AR HIDE AND SEEK - the classic game of hide and seek with a high tech twist! Find a virtual token hidden among your everyday surroundings using Apple's new ARKit technology Watch out - it's probably hiding in plain (augmented) sight.
WOW MATCH - find the co-leader you always knew you deserved with this handy tool to find a potential WOW co.

In case you couldn't make it this past meeting, no worries! You can always download what our project groups wrote through our public GitHub files so you can always come next week and join us on our app dev adventures! Check the link below to check out what we've been up to!
During our next project meeting on Sunday, October 29thour groups will be developing the first sketches of their app prototypes and planning the first steps in creating their apps. We will also be hosting an Intro to Swift/Xcode Workshop for those new to the language at12:30pm.

While projects Capture the Flag, Assassin, and AR Hide and Seek will be meeting from 11:00am - 2:00pm, WOW Match will be meeting from 2:00pm - 5:00pm.

If you're not already a part of a project group, be sure to contact us at calpolyappdev@gmail.com so we can connect you with your preferred group. It is important that you email us because project meeting times can vary.
