Calling

hustle, creativity and prototyping that define the Cal Poly Center for
Innovation and Entrepreneurship's Innovation Quest competition. This event
provides you with an outstanding opportunity to win $30,000 and advance your

2. CENG Diversity & Inclusion Speaker Series

Cal Poly graduate discusses
his journey from undocumented immigrant to Apple engineer:
Alumnus Enrique Diaz’s
life story is fit for film. The 48-year-old retiree was born in Mexico and
arrived in the US when he was only two. Growing up in a challenging
environment, Diaz worked several manual labor agriculture jobs before attending
Cal Poly as a computer science major. He later went on to work for Apple, Inc.
straight after college, and after immense success as a research and development
scientist, retired at age 46.
Diaz will be discussing
his journey from the Central Valley to Silicon Valley as part of the College of
Engineering’s Diversity and Inclusion Speaker Series.

3. NEW CLUB: Computing for Developing Countries and Marginalized
People
New Group! Computing for
Developing Countries and Marginalized People
80% of the world population and
99% of global growth is in developing countries. Common challenges facing these communities
include poverty, nutrition, health, education, economic vulnerability, violence
against women, water/sanitation, energy, pollution, climate change. There are many existing groups doing great
work on addressing these problems. However, most of these groups are not
focused on utilizing computing and emerging technologies, including many of the
recent advances in computing. We are
forming a new interdisciplinary group at Cal Poly to address this gap.
We are looking for excited
students to become the founding members of the club. Anyone, including freshman
and sophomores, is invited to join and become a club officer. This club is
primarily addressing the lack of EE/CPE/CSC major-related project-based groups
but ALL majors are welcome and encouraged to join. Not only is this a great
resume builder, but it’s also a great outlet to use your academic skill set to
participate in real projects helping real people.

4. CPE Tutor for Writing and Learning Center
The
Writing and Learning Center is currently looking for a CPE tutor (preferably an
upper-division CPE major)! This opportunity is a paid student work position where
you would be able to set hours that work with your course schedule.

will put you in contact with the Writing and Learning Center director.

5. CPE 316 for Spring 2020
New this Spring, CPE 316!
CPE 316 is an approved substitution for CPE 329 and provides an early
opportunity for CPE students to obtain experience with embedded systems earlier
in the curriculum. This class is similar in content as CPE 329 but with
additional focus on good practices in embedded systems programming.
For Spring 2020, Dr.
Oliver will be teaching two sections: MWF 10-noon and MWF 2-4pm. The catalog
description is:
CPE 316: Microcontrollers and Embedded
Applications.4 units
Term Typically Offered: F,
SP
Prerequisite: CPE 357.
Corequisite: EE 211.
Introduction to
microcontrollers and their applications as embedded devices. Hardware/software
tradeoffs, microcontroller selection, use of on-chip and off-chip peripherals,
interrupt driven real-time operation, A/D conversion, serial and parallel
communications, watch-dog timers, and low power operation. Not open to students
with credit in CPE329 or CPE336. 3 lectures, 1 laboratory.

6. Roborodentia 2020
Roborodentia 2020 is
here! Roborodentia is Cal Poly's annual
robotics competition held in the Spring quarter. This is a competition of autonomous robots
where the winner receives a prize of $1,000.

The Computer Engineering
Program is looking for a graphic designer!

Job Requirements: Student position available to
design/create logo and other graphic materials (programs/poster/web images) for
our upcoming banquet. We need an interesting, eye-catching design that meets
the needs of our theme. Design submittal is part of the application process.
Hours are flexible and may evolve into more assignments.

compelling design concept of our upcoming event. If you can help us, this job
may be for you.

3D Printing Workshop
When: Wednesday, March 4th
& Thursday, March 5th

handheld fans! The workshop will include learning how to use the 3D printer and
learning a little bit about motors as well. This event will take place over the
course of two days. Wednesday (3/4) and Friday (3/6) from 4-6. Spaces are

The Writing and Learning
Center, located in Kennedy Library 111C, offers one-to-one and group tutoring
in Computer Engineering. Tutors are available to offer general help as well as
specific support for the courses listed below. Also note that the center hosts
a Math and Statistics Help Hub every Monday through Thursday, 3 - 7 pm, as well
as drop-in tutoring hours for CENG core support courses on Thursdays from 4 - 6
pm.
