Our mission is to diversify the field of computer science by giving womxn of all backgrounds and fields the opportunity to delve into coding within a supportive and inclusive environment. HackSC 2020
January 31 – February 2, 2020
University of Southern California
HackSC is the University of Southern California’s largest hackathon. This year, they’re focused on bringing real solutions to those in need by pushing the boundaries of technology, innovation, and collaboration. This year will have four categories under which you can compete: Sustainability, Civil Liberties, Mental Health, and Equity. Applications to compete are open November 1 – November 22.

Join CPES, IEEE, and WISH for Game Night! There will be a Smash Bros tournament with prizes and other games like Mario Kart, Jackbox, and Catan. Food is provided!

PCB Christmas Tree
Interested in learning PCB layout and surface mount soldering? Sign up for our two-part PCB Christmas/Flashing Lights Tree workshop! We'll teach you the basics of KiCAD and how to turn a schematic into a printed circuit board, as well as techniques for soldering small components. Take this tree home as a gift for friends or family, or just for yourself as a nice little decoration :)
$8 non-members, $6 members

5. Upcoming WISH Activities—Women Involved in Software and Hardware

Girls Who Handle It 4
Friday, November 15th from 5:00 PM – 9:00 PM
San Luis Obispo Museum of Art (1010 Broad Street)
Come join us on Friday, November 15th for an evening of EMPOWERING the girls in our community, supporting them, encouraging them and in turn, setting an example to do the same for ourselves. Girls Who Handle It is about increasing the level of public vulnerability and advocate for a community of honest sharing and acceptance, specifically amongst women. In doing so, GWHI is a platform where women in the SLO community are sharing their personal stories about how much they're really going through in their lives and how they are handling these challenges - even though we don't see it anywhere on social media. We have two amazing WISH officers who will be featured in the gallery. Please come and support Kellie Banzon and Louise Ibuna as they share their incredible stories!

6. Upcoming Cal Poly Amateur Radio Club (CPARC) Activities

FALL TRANSMITTER HUNT 
Saturday, November 9th
Mark your calendars! Our fall transmitter hunt is a few weeks away! During this event, you will get to use specialized radio antennas to locate hidden transmitters on campus! Not even a Ham license, let alone radio experience, is needed to participate in this event, as only receiving is needed and we’ll teach you everything you need to know.

BEACoN is a program funded by the Office of University Diversity & Inclusivity to mentor diverse students across the Cal Poly Campus. They are offering paid undergraduate research projects for the 2020 Winter and Spring quarters. You will be matched with a BEACoN mentor for these projects and receive compensation.

10. Tutoring Services

The Writing and Learning Center supports academic achievement by providing peer-to-peer learning opportunities in a welcoming environment. All students are encouraged to engage in free individual and small-group tutoring sessions with trained undergraduate and graduate consultants on any activity, assignment, or exam. Writing and subject-specific peer consultations are available in multiple locations across campus with the main hub in Kennedy Library, Room 111C.

13. Volunteer Opportunities through the Society of Women Engineers (SWE)

Monthly Mentors Elementary and Middle School Volunteers
Monthly Mentors is one of Cal Poly SWE's newer outreach events and takes place throughout the year! The goal of this program is to bring monthly hands-on engineering activities to elementary and middle school students in surrounding communities who may not have the resources to support a strong STEM curriculum. If you're interested in learning more about this program and how you can help please fill out this short form!

14. Medical Design Club Projects
Below are the 2019 – 2020 MDC projects that we will pursue this year! None of our projects require any prior technical experience, and they are all looking for new members of all majors! Team leads are currently in the process of scheduling weekly project meeting times. EpiPen Redesign: Development of an alternative epinephrine autoinjector through the incorporation of a needleless injection mechanism.

15. QL+ Student Association Design Projects and Announcements

Formal Design Projects (FDPs)
This year we are offering six year-long formal design projects.

Quarterly Design Project (QDP)
This quarter for our QDP we are designing adaptive video game controllers for individuals with disabilities.
If you’re interested in joining this project, just come to our meeting this Tuesday at 6:10 in the QL+ Lab and we’ll add you to a team.

Cybathlon (Exoskeleton) Project
We are working on engineering an exoskeleton for a local Cuesta College student named Tamar, who has quadriplegic cerebral palsy.
If you’re interested in getting involved with this project, attend the Cybathlon meetings every Thursday 6:10-8:00 in the QL+ Lab.

16. CSU Sacramento Master’s Degree | Fall 2020
Deadline: March 1, 2020

Master students needed for an NSF-funded project at California State University, Sacramento
This targets senior students and recent graduates who are interested in doing a Master degree in Computer Science or Engineering at Sac State. Note that although the selected students will not enroll in the Master program until Fall 2020, they will be able to start working on the project immediately as non-student research assistants for up to 19.5 hours per week.
